When planning a trip to Thailand, a good many travelers head to Bangkok almost by default. What they may not be aware of is that while Bangkok is indeed a great destination, it is not the only place in the country worth a visit. Chiang Mai is home to countless tourist attractions, and while there are far too many to list here, we can take a look at some of the spots you need to visit should you travel there. These should help you figure out what to do in Chiang Mai on your next stop there.
Chiang Mai is home to many special places, but perhaps none as stunning as Wat Prahat Doi Suthep. This is one of the most commonly visited temples in the city, and is also among the most interesting places in Chiang Mai. The shrine sits atop a mountain and can be reached in a number of different ways. Adventurous visitors may want to hike to the top, while those looking for a more relaxed trip can hop on board the red trucks known as songthaew. The shrine is incredibly ornate, but the highlight for many is the seated Buddha that is found inside.
If it is great views that you are looking for, DoiInthanon is the one place that you have to visit. There are plenty of things to see and do as you make your way to the top of the highest peak in the country. There are waterfalls, a hill tribe village, and a pair of pagodas, as well as ample hiking trails and a host of other attractions. With so much to see and do, you really should plan for a full day visit. There are many organized tours that will take you to all the must see spots of one of the greatest attractions on Chiang Mai.
When in Chiang Mai, you will see that there are all kinds of different elephant habitats available to visit. Not all are of a very high standard, though, but one that never disappoints is the Elephant Nature Park. This is a habitat where the animals are treated with the greatest respect, and where you can essentially help with looking after an elephant for a day. You will get to feed and clean the elephants, and you will also get to take a ride on one of these magnificent beasts.
If you are looking to do some souvenir shopping while in Chiang Mai, you can’t so much better than the Night Bazaar. Everything you can imagine can be found there, and you can also haggle with the vendors in order to get a better price. Once you are finished shopping, you will also have the opportunity to attend a muay Thai boxing match, as the arena where the fights are held is located on the premises of the bazaar. This type of fighting is incredibly popular in Thailand, and attending the events give you a real insight into the why this is such a much-loved sport.
Chiang Mai offers so many things to do that whatever your tastes are, you’ll be able to fill your days with visits and activities you will remember for ever.
